Trash/Solid Waste

The City of Vandalia contracts for removal and disposal of household trash, recycling, yard waste and bulk items with the current contract being held by Rumpke of Ohio. Every owner or occupant of any building must keep garbage in approved weatherproof/pestproof containers with tight fitting lids or in sealed bags. Trash must be placed at the curb for pickup before 6 a.m. on the scheduled collection day but no earlier than 12:00 noon on the day preceding the pickup and all containers must be moved from the curb by 6:00 p.m. of the day following the scheduled pickup day. When not at the curb for pickup, all trash and garbage receptacles shall either be in an enclosed building or placed behind the front building line. If your trash items are not collected, please contact Rumpke at 461-0004.

Yard Waste (i.e. - grass, flowers, tree trimmings, etc.) will be picked up the same day as the trash and must be in approved yard waste bags which can be purchased at Ken’s Pharmacy. The Yard Waste truck does not operate during the months of November through February. Rumpke will pick up leaves through the months of November through March. Please put the leaves in plastic bags (you do not have to use yard waste bags)  and place them out at the curb to be collected on your regular trash pickup day. Please...no more than 2 bags per week.

Large Item Pickup: Tired of waiting for once-a-month bulk trash drop-offs?  As a new convenience for Vandalians, Rumpke will provide weekly curbside removal of bulk items and small construction debris for no fee if residents call Rumpke at 461-0004 at least 72 hours in advance. In addition to curbside removal, the city will continue to hold a monthly bulk trash drop-off at the Vandalia's City Garage, 97 Clubhouse Way, on the second Saturday of each month. However, waste will be strictly limited to brush, limbs and large construction debris.Alternatively, you may dispose of almost any disposables directly at the Montgomery County North Incinerator at any time during the month. They are located at 6589 Webster Street, and may be contacted at 898-5459 for hours of operation and disposal fee info.

Recycling:
Items to be recycled include newspaper (including all inserts). Place them in a brown paper bag and put in the recycling bin. Other items include magazines and junk mail, cardboard (please flatten), all tin food cans, aluminum and bi-metal cans (remove all food residue and remove labels if possible), plastics including soda bottles, wide mouthed beverage containers, milk and water jugs. These should also be rinsed and labels removed. Polystyrene (egg cartons, cups, plates, produce and meat trays) will also be taken as well as polycoated paperboard (milk cartons, refrigerated juice cartons, "gable" top containers and "brick" shaped drink boxes). The recycling is billed on the water bill. The current rate is $1.50 per month (billed quarterly).

Rumpke recognizes six holidays throughout the year on which trash collection will not take place. These holidays are as follows:

Memorial Day (last Monday of May each year)
Independence Day   (July 4)
Labor Day (first Monday of September each year)
Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November each year)
Christmas Day (December 25th)
New Year’s Day (January 1)

If any of these holidays fall on your pickup day, Rumpke will pick up your trash on the day immediately following. Trash collection schedule for the remainder of the week will be delayed one day.

Rumpke offers rental of a 96 gallon toter with wheels on it. You may contact Rumpke at 461-0004 for more information and to rent a toter.
