Bicycle Committee Meetings called by the City Engineer Municipal Building
The Bicycle Committee is made up of three residents of our community to serve in an advisory capacity to the City Engineer regarding design, modifications, and improvement of conditions for bicyclists upon public streets. Members serve a three-year term without compensation.
Board of Tax Appeals Meetings called by Tax Commissioner Municipal Building
The Board of Tax Appeals is made up of three residents of our community to hear appeals from anyone who disagrees with the finding of the Income Tax Commissioner regarding City Income Tax liability. Members serve a one-year term without compensation.
Board of Zoning Appeals Meetings called by Chairman Municipal Building
The Board of Zoning Appeals is responsible for hearing appeals for special exception or variance from the Zoning Code. A citizen may appeal zoning decisions to this Board by filing a petition with the Building Inspection Department. Members serve without compensation for three-year terms.
Civil Service Commission and Appeal Board Meetings called by Chairman Municipal Building
The Civil Service Commission and Appeal Board provides rules for the determination of merit and fitness as the basis for appointment and promotion of classified personnel of the city of Vandalia and hears appeals in case of disciplinary action, transfer, reduction in rank, or removal of any employee.
The Board of Education, City Manager and City Council each appoint one person to serve on the commission. The City Manager acts as Chief Examiner and Secretary. Terms are four years without compensation.
Community Reinvestment Area Housing Council Meetings called by Chairman Municipal Building
The Community Reinvestment Area Housing Council, composed of seven members, is appointed by the Vandalia City Council to annually review projects which have received real property tax abatement as an economic development incentive. Members serve without compensation for a term of three years.
Cultural Arts Endowment Fund Advisory Committee Second Tuesday of every month 7:30 a.m. Municipal Building
The Cultural Arts Endowment Fund Advisory Committee, composed of four members, is appointed by the Vandalia City Council to make recommendations to the Vandalia-Butler Foundation regarding the disbursement of funds to support artistic and cultural activities, programs, performances and organization, or other purposes as determined by the Council of the City of Vandalia. Members serve without compensation for a term of two years.
Golf Advisory Board 7:30 p.m. -3rd Wednesday Held at Cassel Hills Clubhouse
The Golf Advisory Board makes suggestions to the City Manager concerning the supervision, regulation and operation and maintenance of the Cassel Hills Golf Course. They also conduct studies concerning the need for additional regulations or improvements of the golf course facilities. Members serve three-year terms without compensation.
Housing Code Board of Appeals Called by Building Code Official Municipal Building
City Council adopted a Housing/Property Maintenance Code establishing minimum standards for property maintenance. To protect against abuse of this code, a Housing Code Board of Appeals was created. This board is made of five residents to hear appeals from any property owner who thinks this code is being unfairly applied. Terms are three years without compensation.
Human Relations Commission Called by Chairman Municipal Building
The Human Relations Commission, made up of three citizens, is appointed by Vandalia City Council to foster the elimination of prejudice, and carry out the provisions of the city ordinance which prohibits discrimination because of race, color, sex, religion, ancestry, national origin, or place of birth, in employment, housing, public accommodations and other areas of intergroup relations. The Commission may be contacted through the City Manager. Members serve three-year terms without compensation.
Parks and Recreation Advisory Board 6:30 p.m. - 3rd Wednesday Vandalia Recreation Center
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is responsible for making recommendations to Council for the planning of recreational facilities and programs, registrations for their use and supervision and equipment. They review suggestions made by citizens and oversee the Baseball/Softball Commission and the Youth Soccer Commission. Five members are appointed by Council and one member is appointed by the Board of Education. Members serve without compensation for four years.
Planning Commission 7:00 p.m. 2nd & 4th Tuesday Municipal Building
The Planning Commission provides for planning and regulations covering the platting of all lands which are subject to the control of the municipality. It is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the official City zoning map and Comprehensive Plan and may initiate or hear requests for changes in these documents. When requested by the City Council, it may conduct investigations and provide recommendations to Council on matters affecting the future development of the City. Members serve three-year staggered terms without compensation.
Public Art in Vandalia Committee 3:30 p.m., 3rd Tuesday Municipal Building The Public Art in Vandalia Committee works in an advisory capacity for the planning, site and artist selection, fabrication and implementation of the PAIV Program. The Committee also serves within the community as advocates for public art and the City of Vandalia PAIV Program. The Committee is comprised of no more than five voting members. Members should be residents of the City of Vandalia with interest in public arts and the artistic community and should include at least one artist. If any member is not a resident of Vandalia, that nonresident member must either be employed within the City of Vandalia, or be an artist or otherwise involved with the artistic community of another local community. Members serve two-year staggered terms without compensation.
